Adominant feature of the square the church in the northeast corner was orginally Romanesque but was converted into a Gothic basilica between 1290 and 1300. The current form of ST. Mary`s Church is the result of subsequent alterationsthat was introduced in the second half of the 14th century. The two towers facing the Market Square are the most prominent features of the structure. From the higher one (81 tall) which is dubbed the Bugle Tower a trumpeter plays a bugle call at the top of every hour. The bugle`s fanfare, first mentioned in records as early as 1392r,served as a call to open and close the city gates as well as a warning against fires and enemies. The lower tower is 69m talland has always served as a belfry. The most famous and valuable work of art inside the church is the 15th century high altar by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz). The alter carved in wood and polychromed is 13m tall and 11m wide and contains two hundred gilded limewood figures.
Magnificent stained glass windows ( including three from the 14thcentury) adorn the chancel and the 28m tall nave is covered by a Gothic vault, which was painted dark blue with myriads of gilded stars during the 19th century renovation of the church performed under thr direction of the famous painter Jan Matejko. In the treasury, valuable works of ecclesiastical art are exhibited including 300 chasubles.
